Advanced Apprenticeship - Level 3 Diploma in IT Professional Competence at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

Information and Communication Technology, or ICT, is all around us and plays a central part in all of our lives. It is a sector which is growing and advancing all of the time and good ICT skills are becoming an essential quality all employers look for in their employees. The IT Professional Competence qualification helps candidates learn and understand the development of computer solutions that help businesses and individuals become more successful in their work.

IT Professionals serve customers in all types of business. Roles could include being a Support Technician, Website Administrator, Software/Web Developer, Helpdesk Technician or Database Administrator, with a vast range of progression opportunities available.

Level 3 is ideal for those looking to progress in their career or to learn new ICT skills. It is also appropriate for those looking to enter higher education or move into project management and analyst roles.

Course content

IT Professional Competence Advanced Apprenticeship

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 3 in IT Professional Competence
  • Level 3 Certificate in ICT Systems and Principles
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, Maths and IT
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Styles

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. You need to be in a role that requires you to use IT as a main part function (but not necessarily solely)  of your work. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.


Training is delivered in the workplace and an assessor will monitor your progress and conduct assessments in the workplace.

An electronic portfolio system will also be utilised to increase assessor accredibility for customers.

The technical certificate and functional skills are delivered at County Training's Microsoft IT Academy.

Financial information

The cost will be dependent on individual circumstances, there may be funding available to cover training costs.

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully funded. A contribution of £250/£350 may be required for individuals aged 19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.

Future opportunities

On completion of the Level 3 Diploma in IT Professional Competence, candidates may progress onto higher level qualification such as the Level 4 Diploma or higher education such as a Foundation Degree or Honours Degree in IT Management for Business or other non-IT sectors such as management, Finance or Business Skills.

County Training is an accredited Microsoft IT Academy, offering several courses in Information Technology, whether you want to study a vocational qualification or take a range of shorter courses covering paticular IT skills.

Any person currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship is entitled to access a programme of 6 management courses free!
