Public Services : Level 2 at Gateway College

Course description

This course enables you to develop your confidence and interpersonal skills; there is a strong emphasis on developing personal discipline through individual and team activities. All assessments are course work based through a variety of assessment methods.  During the course you may take part in visits to a variety of Public Service organisations and listen to talks from guest speakers in the industry.  You will also develop your English and Maths skills.

This qualification is equivalent to 3 GCSEs.

Course content

The course will be enhanced with outside speakers coming into college from the Army, RAF and Police demonstrating what is required for the career. You will increase your Teamwork and Leadership skills by Participating in activities at Outward Bound Centres at various locations and completing an entire unit learning practical outdoors skills and pursuits, leading others in this.

 

Entry requirements

GCSEs at grade D and E (3/4), or Pass in a Level 1 Vocational Programme, including English Language and Maths grade 3 or Functional Skills Level 1.

Assessment

You will study seven mandatory units and two specialist units. All units are internally assessed.

Mandatory Units

Unit 01 - Investigate employment in the uniformed services

Unit 02 - Physical fitness for the uniformed services

Unit 03 - Develop team working and problem solving skills

Unit 04 - Health and Safety in the uniformed services

Unit 05 - Health and hygiene in the uniformed services

Unit 06 - Follow uniformed service routine

Unit 07 - Exploring equality and diversity for the uniformed services

 

Optional Units

You will study two specialist units which include:

Unit 08 - Carry out map reading and navigation

Unit 10 - Participate in competitive sports

Financial information

Free to all home students.

Future opportunities

Students will be able to join the armed forces or progress to Level 3 or obtain an apprenticeship within their selected field.

If you are considering a career in any of the uniformed or non-uniformed services this course may be for you. Progression to Level 3 offers an excellent opportunity to make an informed choice about a career in the Police, Fire and Ambulance Services, Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, Prison Service, Security Organisations, HM Customs, the National Health Service, and Social Work to name but a few.
