Applied Science BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Redland Green School

Course description

The BTEC certificate in applied Applied Science offers a vocational qualification that focuses on applied science and reflects aspects of employment within science organisations or organisations that use science. These qualifications will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations and disciplines. Each topic will be taught within a realistic Applied Science scenario, making maximum use of practical activities and work experience.

Course content

The course is assessed solely by coursework and you will complete 6 units over two years; 3 units in Year 12 and 3 units in Year 13.

Year 12

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Working in the science industry
  • Scientific practical techniques

Year 13

  • Physiology of human body systems
  • Diseases & infections
  • Biochemistry & biochemical techniques

Entry requirements

NBP16C level 3 entry requirements, including grade C, or above, from your science GCSEs.   If you are a post 16 student with a one year level 2 vocational qualification the minimum requirement is a merit.

 

Assessment

You will experience a variety of teaching and assessment methods, including case studies, assignments and work-based assessments, along with projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessment. As such, it is important that learners attend all timetabled sessions and that they are highly organised, independent and motivated individuals.

Future opportunities

A BTEC national certificate in applied science (Applied Science) will enable you to progress to many degree courses such as foundation nursing, sports studies, applied science, Applied Sciences, dental technology and therapy and exercise studies. Alternatively, this qualification can also lead to direct employment in a science-related area such as laboratory work. The certificate will earn you UCAS points in the same way as A levels do.

(Please note that this course is NOT appropriate if you wish to become a doctor, veterinary surgeon or dentist.)
