Geography AS A2 at Weston Favell Academy

Course content

The course builds on and extends the topics covered at GCSE level. The main modules are:For AS:Unit 1: Changing landforms and their management (rivers and coasts)Unit 2: Managing change in human environments (rural and urban)Unit 3: Environmental Investigation (fieldwork based coursework)For A2Unit 4: Global challenge (ecology, climatology & meteorology: population & economic geography)Unit 5: Researching global futures (individual research from a range of physical and human geography topics)Unit 6: Synoptic Exam

Entry requirements

Whilst it is not a pre-requisite that you studied this subject at GCSE, if you did you must have passed with at least a C to start the AS Level.  As with all A Levels you require a minimum of 5 GCSE passes, or equivalent, at C and above.


For AS level:Units 1 and 2 are assessed by formal exam at the end of Year 12 while Unit 3 is coursework, marked in school and moderated by the exam board. Each Unit carries equal weight.For A2Unit 4 is assessed by formal exam at the end of the year. Unit 5 is assessed by a coursework essay taken from a published list of titles and by an exam question, the topics for which are published in advance. Unit 6 is an exam based, decision making question, the resources for which are published two weeks in advance. Each Unit carries equal weight.

Future opportunities

Again, geography is seen by many employers as an excellent indicator of balanced education. Careers particularly suitable for geographers range from forestry management and weather forecasting to town planning and business management. Piers Sellars, the British born astronaut, is a geography graduate.

Further information

A variety of teaching and learning techniques are used from “lectures” to group research to individual research tasks. Students are increasingly expected to take responsibility for their own learning.Geography is widely regarded as a subject which bridges the gap between the sciences and the arts and as such will complement any subject combination. The content of geography draws from many other subjects from Biology to Sociology.
