A Level English Language at St Thomas More High School for Boys

Course description

A two year course incorporating the study of language, the individual and society as well as language diversity and change. There is also a personal language investigation entitled ‘Language in Action’ where students are expected to research, compile and submit a body of work based on language studies - now called ‘non exam assessment’; formally known as coursework.

B grade or above at English Language GCSE


Paper 1: Language, the Individual and Society
Written exam

  •  2 hours 30 minutes.
  •  100 marks.
  •  40% of A-level.

Paper 2: Language Diversity and Change
Written exam
2 hours 30 minutes.

  •  100 marks.
  •  40% of A-level.

Non-exam assessment: Language in Action
Non-exam assessment

  •  100 marks.
  •  20% of A-level.
  •  Assessed by teachers.
  •  Moderated by AQA.

Future opportunities

Dependent on your University or post 6th Form choices, English Language can lead to professions or degrees with links to Journalism, Linguistic study or research, Philosophy and Science, Humanities and History.
