English Language A Level at Whitworth Park School and Sixth Form College

Course description

This course builds on a natural progression from your GCSE English studies and allows you to develop your ability to express yourself in speech and writing, producing texts for different purposes and audiences and in different genres.

You will develop your interest in and appreciation of English, through learning about its structures and its functions, its developments and variations.

The English department is keen that you reflect critically on your own and others’ communication.

This course is particularly suited to students wishing to study English Language, Linguistics or English studies in higher education. The course also develops skills of communication, highly prized by the full range of employers.

This is a course that complements the studies of sciences, arts, humanities and languages.

At AS you will study Speech and Writing, Social Contexts, Original Writing and Critical Reflection.

At A2 you will study Child Language Acquisition, Language Change and conduct a Language Investigation into an area of your interest.

AS. 2 hour written examination Categorising Texts (60% AS, 30% A level), Coursework Creating Texts (40% AS, 20% A level)

A2. 2 hour 30 minutes written examination Developing Language (30% A level), Coursework Investigating Language (20% A level)

Entry requirements

There is a minimum requirement of GCSE English/Language/Literature grade B
