Applied Science (Forensic Science) Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma at Southport College

Course description

The course aims is to provide an overview of the science industry especially the work of the forensic scientist. The course is traditionally weighted towards science but has a forensic application. The course provides the academic and practical skills for a role in the science and forensic science industry. In this course you will study a total of 18 units over two years.

Course content

You will study subject areas including: 
• Working in the Science Industry
• Fundamentals of Science
• Forensic Evidence Collection & Analysis 
• Scientific Practical Investigations
• Criminology
• Criminal & Forensic Psychology
• Criminal Investigation Procedures

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs at grades A*- C that must include Maths, English and a Science at a minimum of grade C 
• Successful interview 
• Satisfactory reference 


You will be continuously assessed in a variety of ways including investigations, practical work, reports, presentations and the creation of a portfolio.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you may progress to Higher Education to study related courses at university, such as Forensic Science, Forensic Entomology or Forensic & Criminal Psychology. Further study can lead to a range of science-based careers such as forensic science and crime scene investigation. You may also choose to progress into Science Technician roles in industry.
