English Language and Literature A Level at Queens` School

Course description

In Year 12, students study a Shakespeare play and a play by a twentieth-century dramatist, alongside a modern novel.

In Year 13, students complete their Genre Study coursework (this year on comedy), as well as reading a further novel. Throughout the course, students study the board’s poetry anthology and prepare for the ‘Non-Literary Texts’ exam, meaning that, throughout, there is an appealing balance between the literary, the linguistic and the creative.

Entry requirements

Students must also have a C grade or above in GCSE Maths and


Examination for this course is by three two hour exams: Poetry and Prose, Drama and Non-Literary Texts, totalling 80% of the final mark. There is also a coursework element, Genre Study, worth 20%.

Future opportunities

English Language and Literature is superb preparation for a wide range of disciplines. Students in the past have gone on to study education, journalism, law and a plethora of other subjects.
