Music Technology BTEC Cert/Extended Cert Level 3 at New College Telford

Course description

This course is for you if you are seriously interested in developing your skills in Music Technology and Sound Recording. It will also allow you the opportunity to study additional subjects to offer breadth and focus to your study programme.

Course content

This programme is designed for learners who have a strong interest in Music Technology.The college will provide you with access to excellent recording and studio facilities, and a MAC sequencing suite.You will study a number of core units which will develop your skills in Studio Recording Techniques and Live Sound.You will also have the opportunity to study Music and Sound for the Media.You will learn Multi-tracking techniques including the use of microphones, mixing recorded tracks and completing a stereo master recording. You will develop your knowledge of music sequencing software and the transferable skills that facilitate the realisation of musical ideas in both audio and MIDI environments. You will develop the skills to set up, use and discuss sequencing systems and techniques. You will develop your listening skills with a focus on the sound and musical components particularly of interest to music technologists. Assessment will be through written and practical assignments and tasks, some of which may be undertaken in time-controlled conditions.Some of these will be externally set and assessed. This course does not include a formal examination. This programme will have employer involvement, and you will also take part in a period of work experience in both years of your programme.

Entry requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grades A* to C including Maths (grade C (4) or above).English Language is at grade C (4) is also strongly preferred. Alternatively a Level 2 vocational qualification at merit and English Language and Maths GCSE (grade C or above). If you do not have GCSE grade C or above in English Language or Maths, you will study these subjects as an essential part of your programme of study. It is not essential to be able to play a musical instrument.

Future opportunities

This course could help you gain access to Higher Education/Specialist Institutions, and will also prepare you well for working in the industry.The course may also lead to direct employment into areas such as studio assistant, assistant sound designer or trainee sound engineer. Students have progressed on to Higher Education at various universities that offer BA (Hons.) Music Production Courses. Students have also studied here at New College Telford on our HND/HNC Music Production courses.

Further information

This qualification is part of a suite of music based courses at Level 3. These can be studied together in a combination that suits you. The range includes Certificates/Subsidiary Diplomas in: Music Performance and Music Events Management. Alternatively, it can be combined with a range of other options at Level 3 - both AS Levels and BTECs.
