Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 90 Credit/Extended Diploma at Lambeth College

Course description

Lambeth College’s Performing Arts school has emerged as a flagship area for the College with a purpose-built 160-seat theatre, dance studio and state-of-the-art performance facilities.

Our diverse curriculum offers you the opportunity to write and devise theatrical productions, create costumes and set designs, offer technical support, and perform on a theatre in education tour and at drama festivals.

Dedicated tutors and technical staff are renowned for going that extra mile to get you into the career of your dreams. Learners have progressed into training with institutions such as Rambert Dance Company, the Royal Academy of Dance, Italia Conti, Laban, Guildford School of Acting and the Russian Ballet School, as well as numerous universities across the country.

Course content

You will study the following topics:

  • Performing as part of an ensemble and presenting rehearsed work to a live audience
  • Creating performance pieces/plays and developing written skills in workshops
  • Developing and performing an ‘act’ or ‘turn’ as part of a variety show
  • Site-specific performance - creating work for non-conventional performance spaces
  • Skills and techniques of physical theatre, its key practitioners and their styles and their role in contemporary performing arts
  • Audition techniques for employment in live theatre and filmed media
  • Lifestyle and health of the performer – the structure and function of the human body
  • Creating, publicising and performing in a Theatre in Education (TIE) project
  • Children’s theatre
  • Movement skills – mechanics of movement, managing each component in detail with an emphasis on process rather than performance
  • Movement in performance - for actors and dancers
  • Dance - developing technical ability, aesthetic sense, fitness and stamina.

Individual units include:

  • Tap, Urban and Jazz dance
  • Contemporary dance technique
  • Historical performance pieces and their potential for contemporary audiences
  • Rehearsal methodologies, processes and techniques
  • Classical theatre and historic background, structure and style of heightened language
  • Performing with masks
  • Drama improvisation
  • Vocal development
  • Structure and management of performing arts organisations and employment opportunities within the industry

Entry requirements

You will be required to complete a College initial and diagnostic assessment, have an interview and an audition.

In the assessment you will need to achieve a minimum of Level 2 in English or Maths.

You will be expected to have 5 GCSEs at C grade or above, including English or Maths, or equivalent vocational qualifications at Level 2.
