Course description

Who is the course for?

For those students who feel stimulated by UK current affairs but who want to understand the background and mechanisms that shape them.

How will I be taught?

By a variety of methods including lecture, discussion and debate and video.

Course content


Unit 1 People and Politics

We learn about the nature of democracy and different electoral systems. We examine the role of power of pressure groups and the nature of political parties.

Unit 2 Governing the UK

You will learn about the British constitution and how it has changed. We examine the importance of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the judiciary.


Unit 3C Representative Process in the USA

This unit explores methods of representation in US politics. You will study the different elections in America with a specific focus on the nomination and election of the US President. Students will then take an in-depth look at political parties and pressure groups. Finally students examine racial and ethnic politics in the USA.

Unit 4C Governing the USA

This unit examines the constitutional framework of the USA and examines the relationship between the President, Congress and the Supreme Court. Students. examine the power of the American president and whether they have become too powerful.

Entry requirements

You are not required to have studied Government and Politics in advance but if you studied Government & Politics as a GCSE subject, you must have achieved Grade C or above.


Exams 100%. Each unit contributes 25% to your overall grade.

Future opportunities

A wide range of higher education courses. Government and Politics enhances those skills which are appropriate for jobs involving writing, arguing, persuading and debating and consequently can lead to careers in law, politics, the media, education, journalism, business and management.

What equipment or materials will I need?

A good text book that will be recommended to you. Other things such as journals, other books, magazines and IT resources will also be made available to you. A keen interest in current affairs from newspapers and online articles is encouraged. You will need a ring binder and dividers
