Hairdressing Diploma Level 1 at St Helens College

Course description

This course provides a strong foundation for establishing a broad range of hairdressing skills and knowledge, whilst gaining an understanding of the Health and Safety procedures in the hair industry. This course is your first step towards a career as a hairdresser.

You will learn how to shampoo and condition hair effectively, and how to apply colour. You will work on developing your own creativity as a hairdresser and gain lots of new skills and knowledge.

Course content

You will be taught by industry professionals and you will be based in College's fully equipped commercial salon, The Lounge. You will learn the theory behind the practices you explore and you will be provided with the confidence needed to launch your career in Hairdressing. During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Colour hair using temporary colour
  • Salon reception duties
  • Create and maintain retail displays in the salon
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women's hair
  • Styling men's hair
  • Hair plaiting

Work experience within a commercial salon and tutorials will also form part of this course.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Assessment

You will be continuously assessed over the period of the course and are required to complete your assessments on a commercial client (paying customer). At the start of your course, you will practice the skills on friends and family members, following this, you will be required to bring clients in for your assessments. Throughout this course, you will build a portfolio of evidence which will be submitted for verification.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

Future opportunities

This qualification will prepare you to progress onto the next level of study at St Helens College. You will be able to choose from several hairdressing or barbering courses.

Alternatively, you may wish to secure employment, a traineeship or an apprenticeship in the industry.
