Sport Career Academy at Sandwell College

Course description

School leavers that are looking to work directly in the Sports Industry as a Fitness Instructor or Community Sports Coach and do not plan to progress to Higher Education.

Course content

Over the academic year students will complete 3 vocational qualifications:

Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport
Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym based)
Level 2 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport

On top of these formal qualifications, you will also have the opportunity to gain a number of Sports Leadership awards. You will work alongside teaching staff to gain 30 hours work experience during the course, which will involve supporting local Door Step Clubs, Sports Festivals, etc.

Entry requirements

Academic requirements include 4 GCSEs at C or above or equivalent. You must also demonstrate a high level of commitment and enthusiasm during the interview process.

You are required to purchase college Sports uniform, which you will be expected to wear during all lessons at college.


Assessments are assignment based with no formal exams, just coursework, log books, practical observations and the like.

Future opportunities

Following completion of this one-year course, you are able to apply directly for jobs within the Fitness Industry as a qualified Fitness Instructor as well as applying for jobs within the Sports Coaching Sector. If you wish to continue your studies, you can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Sport that is equivalent to 2 A Levels.
