Level 2 Countryside and Environment (Gamekeeping) at Newton Rigg College

Course description

An introduction for those who would like to work towards a career in gamekeeping and wildlife management. All countryside managers including gamekeepers, estate managers and rangers will need to be even more aware of changing agricultural, forestry and habitat conservation practice than ever before.

Course content

Course Themes:

• Shoot management • Game and wildlife management • Deer management • Ecology • Habitat creation and conservation • Estate skills • Pest and predator control • Work experience • Health and safety • English and maths


Opportunities exist to take additional specialist qualifications, e.g. ATV, Deer Stalking Certificate but charges may apply.

Entry requirements

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade E or above including Maths and English (with Science desirable). Alternatively a suitable level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1

Future opportunities

Further Study:


Students completing the Level 2 to a high

standard would be considered for enrolment onto the Level 3

Extended Diploma in Countryside Management or Advanced

Apprenticeship in Gamekeeping.



Students may use this course to progress in careers

in the game industry e.g. Underkeeper or Beatkeeper level;

working with low ground game, grouse and/or deer; the

countryside industry at craft level e.g. as stonewallers, fencers.

After further study and experience there should be

progression opportunities to become single-handed

gamekeeper or wildlife manager.
