Popular Music (Performance) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Richard Huish College

Course description

This course, equivalent to 3 A Levels, offers students the chance to completely submerge themselves into every aspect of music making. The course is designed for students with a genuine interest in working in the Music Industry as a performer or producer or in fact any area of the industry.

The Extended Diploma in Popular Music and Music Production is a fun and authentic course. It gives you an insight into what it is like to work in the music industry and it is an excellent way to improve and build your skills and confidence.

Course content

You will study many aspects of the Popular Music and Music Production Extended Certificates with additional units in marketing, promotion, production and performance.

Entry requirements

Standard college entry requirements: 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English


There are a number of different assessment methods from portfolio work, to live performances, to externally assessed units, but the qualification remains focussed on building on practical skill sets to enable you to work within the industry. During your time here, you will have the opportunity to get hands on experience at a number of festivals from Glastonbury, to Tunes in the Dunes.

Future opportunities

  • Providing vocationally-related education and training for those who are intending to work, or who already work, in the Music Industry
  • Providing opportunities for learners to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3 vocationally specific qualification either to enter employment in the music industry sector or to progress to higher education or vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Music Performance and Music Production.
  • Providing opportunities for learners to develop skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to the music industry in an applied learning context giving learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.

    • Huish is situated on the edge of parkland overlooking fields and hills, about ten minutes walk from the town centre.

      Huish is committed to encouraging you to travel to college by cycle, public transport or car sharing where possible. There is a cycle path to the College taking you to Vivary Park so that you don’t have to walk or cycle with the traffic along South Road. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to college from the bus station but many of the buses students use come directly to the campus.
