Course description

  • GCSEs to include at least a grade C in Art (portfolio assessment if Art not taken)
  • This course focuses on two-dimensional media – drawing and painting
  • Students are required to complete a written element within the course, so a C grade in English is advantageous

Course content

The Fine Art course mainly focuses on drawing, painting and mixed media artwork and is designed to follow on naturally from GCSE Art and Design. It is intended to prepare you for further studies in these fields. You will develop a variety of skills, both practical and academic. You will extend and add to your knowledge of materials, techniques and practices that you’ve already gained at GCSE. We will encourage you to develop your imaginative and creative powers. You will learn how to sensitively observe and draw the world around you; how to analyse artwork; how line, shape, colour, light and shade can be employed to create effective pieces of artwork. The emphasis is always on direct observation – drawing from real life. You will have the benefit of working in a dedicated open plan art studio, supported by experienced teaching staff and a full time specialist technician. All the staff have exhibited their own work professionally. There will be at least one study visit to galleries to enrich and inspire your work.

Assessment is based on your coursework so commitment, enthusiasm and organisation – as well as creativity – will be important qualities to maintain throughout the year.
