Children's Play, Learning and Development BTEC level 3 National Award at Cannock Chase High School
The aim of the course is to enable learners to acquire and demonstrate the skills required to care for young children.
Unit 1: Child Development: Students will learn about the ways in which children grow and develop and the ways that the areas of development are interlinked. Learners will look at theories relating to development and factors that influence children’s development.
Unit 2: Play and Learning: Students will learn about the importance of play and its role in children’s development, focussing on different theoretical and philosophical approaches to play and learning.
Unit 4: Health and Safety in Early Years Settings: Students will learn about prevention and control of infection, how to keep children safe and secure and how to assess health and safety risks in an early years setting.
Unit 8: Safeguarding in Early Years: Students will learn about the roles of early years professionals in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and how to recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
Unit 9: Observation, Assessment and Planning: Students will learn about the importance of observing, assessing and planning when working with children and will be required to carry out and interpret observations and activity plans.

Students will be assessed by means of unit assignments. Assignments will be awarded a PASS, MERIT or DISTINCTION. Learners will be made aware, prior to the completion of each assignment, of the criteria required to fulfil these categories.
Unit 1 will be externally assessed by means of a written exam.
The course is vocational and therefore work-related learning is necessary. Work-related learning experiences will be required in order to complete Unit 9.
Future possible career paths would include: nursery worker, midwife, health visitor, teacher, youth worker, child protection officer, police officer, social worker, play therapist.
