Netball Studies - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Myerscough College

Course description

The new Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification (formerly National Diploma) is a popular option for school leavers, young adults and successful Level 2 Diploma students. This two-year 18-unit course is equivalent to three A Levels and is designed for students who wish to develop a comprehensive overview of the sports industry, encompassing the practical techniques and technical skills associated with nettball and sports coaching.

The units studied have a strong academic focus – requiring dedication and hard work – whilst still delivering a range of important practical skills. Students enjoy the wide variety of subjects that are covered.

Course content

The course incorporates all 12 units from the two-year Level 3 Diploma (listed seperately), with students on the Extended Diploma taking an extra 3 units each year, making 18 in total.(Students enrol initially on a one-year ‘90-Credit Diploma’ qualification (9 units) and then, subject to successful completion, progress to the next 9 units – achieving the Extended Diploma at the end of their 2nd year.)

Additional units cover the current issues associated with sport, sport as a business, sports injuries (prevention, treatment and rehabilitation), talent identification
and development, organising sporting events and coaching children and young people.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English Language (plus any course specific subjects listed on the relevant fact sheet), or an Intermediate Level course (e.g. Level 2 Diploma at Distinction including at least one Functional Skill at Level 2), or equivalent qualifications.


A wide range of assessment methods are used during the course, to give all students the opportunity to maximise their success.

Future opportunities

The Level 3 Extended Diploma prepares students for a wide range of careers in the nettball and wider sports industry. It is also a perfect foundation for students wishing to progress to Higher Education – offering up to 168 UCAS Tariff points towards entrance on a wide range of degree courses here at Myerscough or at other universities and colleges.

Career Opportunities include being a fitness instructor, community sports coach, netball coach or player, strength and conditioning coach, sports development officer, gym instructor, sports retail, public and armed services.
