Modern Foreign Languages at Formby High School

Course description

As the Czech proverb says, 'You live a new life for every new language you speak'. Studying languages at A Level will develop your skills as a communicator and give you the ability to discuss topical and social themes such as politics, sport or the role of technology in modern life.

Many lessons are held in our multi - media language lab with specialist programmes, access to websites and digitised recordings to make sure that we offer you the best learning experience possible. You will soon be competent in communication and understanding, and successfully engage with the language whether it be for personal, professional, or social considerations.

Course content

The aim of the course is to ensure that you develop both a sound command of French or Spanish and an appreciation of the culture of French/ Spanish speaking countries. During the course you will have access to a wide range of resources to improve and deepen your knowledge.

The study of the topic areas such as Communication and Media will encourage the development of all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and will involve the use of video recordings, newspapers, magazines, websites and a wealth of audio material.

You will benefit from a stimulating course which develops intellectual skills and independent learning, enabling you to use a foreign language for the purpose of practical communication.

Content of the Year 12 Course:

  • Aspects of society - social issues and trends
  • Artistic culture

Content of the Year 13 Course:

  • Multiculturalism in Hispanic society
  • Aspects of political life in Hispanic society
  • Grammar
  • Literacy texts and films

Entry requirements

B grade in GCSE French/ Spanish

Future opportunities

The study of a foreign language at A Level combines well with many other subjects and a qualification can lead to a wide choice of future employment in publishing, trade and commerce, travel and tourism, translating, the media and teaching. A firm grasp of a language allied to competence in other skills, may well enhance your future employment prospects
