Course description

A foreign language is a key to open doorsto other worlds. It enables students todevelop a broader choice of AS courses, asit covers many topics taught in other areas,such as History, Geography, Science,Literature, Economics and ReligiousStudies. It is useful in the working world asmany companies have international linksand prefer employees with knowledge ofanother language. It is also a challengingacademic exercise, highly valued atuniversity level, and it is enjoyable.Students taking a modern foreign languagein the Sixth Form will be able to build ontheir experience at GCSE by increasingtheir linguistic competence and their selfconfidenceto express their ideas inanother language. They will gain a moredetailed insight into the culture of Germanspeaking countries, improve their generalcommunication and research skills and alsolearn much about other issues in the worldabout us.

AS Level
The topic areas are:

  • Youth culture and concerns
  • Lifestyle: health and fitness
  • The world around us
  • Education and employment

    A2 Level
    The topic areas are the same as for AS with the following additions:

  • Customs, traditions, beliefs and religions
  • National and international events
  • Literature and the arts

  • Entry requirements

    Anyone intending to take German at AS or A Level will normally be expected to have achieved a grade A or A* at GCSE, although occasionally a grade B will suffice to startthe course.
