Media Studies at Bishop Luffa School

Course description

This course helps you develop three relationships with the media. As a consumer you will be far more aware of the variety of ways in which messages are presented and how the institutions which produce and distribute media products are trying to reach and involve you. Furthermore, producing andevaluating your own work gives you a real understanding of both how media messages are created and what they are aiming to do.

AS Level
In the first year you will study two key aspects of the media.Unit 1 Investigating Media In this unit, you will learn the fundamentals of media forms and platforms and the concepts which lie beneath the surface, as well as the role of marketing and promotion of these products. You then get the chanceto apply this to an area across different media platforms.
Unit 2 Creating Media; In this unit you will also get into ‘Creating Media’ for yourself, which takes you from researching the codes and conventions in existing media products through to producing some pieces yourself.

A2 Level
Unit 3 Critical Perspectives In the second year you will look at different ways of explaining and understanding the media and how it works. This covers the way issues are represented by the media, plus the impact of new media on how messages are produced, communicated and received. You will undertake a case study on one or more of these issues and look at how they can be understood in terms of media debates and theories.
Unit 4 Research and Production; You will also carry out an individual piece of work in this unit . This gives you the chanceto really get to understand the relationship between research and a piece of production which links to it, and to showwhat you both know and can do.
