Art and Design (Graphics) A Level at Holy Cross Sixth Form College

Course description

The graphics course gives you the opportunity to develop a personal and structured approach to project work by exploring ideas and materials, developing your critical faculties in both practical and written work and acquiring a high level of design, presentation and making skills.

Course content

This is a specialised course that involves work in areas of illustration, advertising graphics and typography. You will be expected to show proficiency in drawing and painting as well as exploring a wide variety of techniques and ideas related to both art and design. Graphic computer based work will be used as a creative method to develop and realise ideas. You will study the work of other artists, designers and photographers, including work from primary sources during visits to galleries and museums.

Entry requirements

General college entry requirements. In addition, you will need a grade C or above in Graphics, Art or a related area such as Design Technology. Grade C or higher in English is recommended. If you have studied BTEC Art and Design/Art and Design Extended Certificate/Art and Design Diploma you will need a Pass at Level 2. Students without GCSE in Art or a related subject will need to present a folder of work for negotiation, which must include at least one drawing made from direct observation.

Assessment

The assessment constitutes coursework (60%) and an externally set assignment, supported by preliminary studies (40%). The coursework includes a written, illustrated critical and contextual study, related to an area of interest for the student.

Future opportunities

Most students go on to specialised degree courses in Art & Design. There are many careers open to you from fine art to industrial design, including restoration, museum work, arts administration, advertising, photography, textiles, fashion, television, communications, occupational therapy and teaching. Most things around you have been designed by or required the skills of a trained artist in their production or promotion.
