Throughout the study of this course candidates will be required to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas: Using and applying mathematics - Problem solving - Communicating - Reasoning Number and algebra - Numbers and the number system - Calculations - Solving numerical problems - Equations, formulae and identities - Sequences, functions and graphs Shape, space and measures - Geometrical reasoning - Transformation and coordinates - Measures and construction Handling data - Specifying the problem and planning - Collecting data - Processing and representing data - Interpreting and discussing results Assessment: Foundation tier (Grades C to G ) Examination: Paper 1 - Non-calculator, 40%. Paper 2- Calculator 40%. Coursework: Teacher marked coursework a) Handling data project 10% b) Investigation task 10% Higher tier (Grades A* to D) Examination: Paper 3 - Non-calculator, 40 %. Paper 2 - Calculator 40%. Coursework: Teacher marked coursework a) Handling data project 10% b) Investigation task 10%

Future opportunities

You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Mathematics or Statistics or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to mathematics such as an Accountant, Finance Clerk, Teacher or Payroll Officer. You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
