Religious Studies (Philosophy & Ethics) - AS Level at RR6 Wimbledon

Course description

Why study Philosophy and Ethics? Philosophy and Ethics is a course which provides a critical approach to the consideration of moral and philosophical issues. Philosophy and Ethics is highly regarded by universities and employers as it proves that you are able to think, discuss and evaluate. This subject is an excellent preparation for any Humanities degree. There are four compulsory modules to be completed over the two years. Two modules on Philosophy of Religion and two modules on Philosophy of Ethics. Students will study Ancient Greek influences on Philosophy of Religion. Students will study the theories of philosophers such as Socrates, Aristotle and Aquinas and contemporary discourse from Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins. They will also study Judaeo-Christian influences on philosophy of religion. Traditional arguments for the existence of God and challenges to religious belief will also be considered. During the second year students will cover religious language, experience and religion, nature of God, life, death and miracle. Students will also study Philosophy of Ethics covering ethical theories and applied ethics topics. During the second year students will study meta-ethics, free will and determinism, conscience, virtue and applied ethics topics. All assessment is by written examination. Examinations will be available in both January and June series. An integral part of the course is to apply theories to contemporary issues of abortion, euthanasia, sexual ethics, war and peace, justice, law & punishment.
