Mathematics A level at Hartismere School

Course description

What is in the course?
By studying modules in pure and applied mathematics you will develop a range of skills including mathematical modelling, logical reasoning and problem solving.

 

Course content

AS One Year Course
Core 1 
is the first pure mathematics module and builds on some of the content in GCSE Mathematics. Topics studies include: algebra, geometry, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and series, trigonometry and differentiation.
Core 2 includes algebra, functions, co-ordinate geometry, sequences and series, differentiation and integration. The applied mathematics module Decision 1 introduces modelling of transportation and production problems using algorithms and networks.

A Level Two Year Course
Core 3 
algebraic fractions, functions, exponentials and logarithms, numerical methods, further trigonometry and calculus.
Core 4 Partial fractions, co-ordinate geometry, binomial expansion, vectors and more advanced techniques in calculus.

An applied module in either mechanics or statistics, Mechanics 1 includes mathematical models in mechanics, vectors, kinematics, statics and moments. Statistics 1 includes topics on probability and statistical techniques including correlation, regression, discrete random variables and the normal distribution.

Entry requirements

Grade A or above (higher level GCSE Mathematics course).

Assessment

Assessment is through exam only. 

Future opportunities

This is a well regarded subject in many careers, as well as providing the foundation for further mathematical studies in accountancy, industry, commerce, science, engineering, teaching and others.
