Biology A level at Kenilworth School and Sports College

Course description

AS and A2 level Biology will give you an understanding of the processes that take place in living organisms e.g. Osmosis, Mitosis, DNA, Heart structure, Diseases, Reproduction and Nerves. During the year the aim is to build on concepts developed in the National Curriculum and extend the student’s knowledge and understanding whilst developing communication, experimental and IT skills. Practical work is a major element of the course and students will need to enhance their experimental skills of planning investigations, carrying them out, collecting evidence, interpreting and evaluating evidence.

Course content

AS - Content is split into four teaching modules:

  • Module 1 – development of practical skills in biology
  • Module 2 – Foundations in Biology
  • Module 3 – Exchange and transport
  • Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease

A2 - Content is split into six teaching modules:

  • Module 1 – Development of practical skills in biology
  • Module 2 – Foundations in biology
  • Module 3 – Exchange and transport
  • Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease
  • Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis and energy
  • Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems

Entry requirements

An A or B in both Core and Additional Science, or an A*, A or B grade in GCSE Biology is the minimum entry requirement to the course. Also a GCSE grade B is required in Mathematics All other GCSE results would be considered on merit.

Assessment

AS

  • Breadth in biology (01): 1 hour 30 minutes written paper
  • Depth in biology (02): 1 hour 30 minutes written paper 

A2

  • Biological processes (01): 2 hour 15 minutes written paper
  • Biological diversity (02): 2 hour 15 minutes written paper
  • Unified biology (03): 1 hour 30 minutes written paper
  • Practical endorsement in biology (04): non-exam based
