Biology A Level at St John's Marlborough

Course description

Students will gain a greater understanding of biological facts and awareness of developments in biology in the new millennium. They will enjoy and develop a personal interest in the study of living things and develop greater expertise in practical work.

Course content

A Level Course Content:

Unit 1:

Topics: Biological molecules, cells, exchange of substances, genetics and variation.

Unit 2:

Topics: Energy transfer, homeostasis, genetics, evolution and gene expression.

Unit 3:

This paper assesses the same content and also relevant practical skills covered throughout the course. The paper will also contain one essay question (you will have a choice of two).

Entry requirements

B in Biology GCSE or BB in GCSE Double Science; B in English; B in Maths

Assessment

A Level Course

Unit 1: 35% of A level

2 hours paper with short and long answer questions

Unit 2: 35% A level

2 hours paper with short answer questions and a comprehension question

Unit 3:

This paper assesses the same content and also relevant practical skills covered throughout the course. The paper will also contain one essay question (you will have a choice of two).

Future opportunities

With good grades you could train to become a Doctor, Dentist, Veterinary Surgeon, Research Scientist etc.

Other possibilities are Agriculture, Biotechnology, Nursing, Forestry, Psychotherapy, Speech Therapy, Ophthalmology, Pharmacy, Microbiology and Forensic Science.

These courses of study and employment are particularly open to students combining Biology with Chemistry and other courses with high levels of written comprehension, evaluation and communication.
