Photography (AS/A Level) at New College Swindon
This is an exciting course taught through practical workshops teaching you a variety of practical skills and developing your ability to understand visual communication – something you are exposed to and utilise constantly in our image saturated society.
This course aims to develop your understanding of Photography, as a form of artistic expression and as a medium of communication and social documentation.
You will familiarise yourself with the practice, history, principles and application of photography.
You will use both traditional and digital photography and will learn how to make aesthetic and technical judgements.

You will study a combination of Lens-based and Light-based Media. Topics will include photographic technology, cameras, lenses and related accessories, lighting and light sources, sensitive materials, processing, printing and finishing, as well as new digital technologies and applications.
You will also study historical processes, the various styles of photography in an historical and contemporary context; the role of photography and its inter-relationship with other visual media; subjective evaluation and critical interpretation of images.
You must have five grade C or above GCSE’s with English Language at grade C or above to enable you to record information, write short essays and analyse production processes in which you will be involved.
Personal commitment, an inquisitive nature and enthusiasm are essential, and some evidence of artistic ability is desirable.
Assessment for both AS Level and A2 (A Level) is continuous, by coursework and controlled tests assessed internally and externally.
The course can lead to a degree course in Photography or related media subjects which can lead you into a range of careers.
New College offers a range of HNC’s, HND’s and a Foundation in Art course to prepare for Art Degree application if necessary.
