Performing Arts BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Preston's College

Course description

The performing arts industry covers a broad range of disciplines from theatre and opera to carnival arts and street performance. Combining your creative talents with key employability skills in self promotion, this course will prepare you with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in industry. You will cover relevant subjects including drama, theatre, music, dance and contextual studies, as well as have the opportunity to apply your learning in front of a live audience in our end of year performance.

Course content

You’ll be required to complete six mandatory units including performance work, the performing arts business and contextual studies. Units must also be taken in acting and dancing. Areas of study include drama, the theatrical business, technical, musical and dance aspects. You will also study functional skills English and maths.

Entry requirements

You need four GCSE’s at grade D or above including English and maths. You must complete an induction period to assess your level of learning and pass an audition, where you will perform a prepared piece of any form lasting 2-3 minutes.


Practical coursework and a written portfolio provide the basis for your assessment. You will also participate in a final performance.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course allows progression to the Level 3 course in Acting, Musical Theatre or Dance. You will also be qualified to apply for jobs in performing arts and the entertainments sector, however your transferable skills can be used in any career.The qualification is relevant to the following careers:

– Screenwriting
– Teaching
