PE (First Certificate Sport) at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

Edexcel BTEC students will study 3 units over KS4. They will study the following units: * Unit 1 - The Body in Sport - students will cover the skeleton, muscles, heart and lungs and how all are affected by exercise. * Unit 2 - Health, Safety and Injury in Sport - students will cover risk assessments, treatments of injuries, rules, regulations and legislations in the work place associated with sport. * Unit 6 - Practical Sport - students have to complete a portfolio of evidence of their knowledge of a team and an individual sport. * Unit 5 - Planning and Leading Sports Activities - students will understand the skills, qualities and responsibilities associated with successful sports leadership, plan and lead two organised events over the year for primary school children. The course is work-related and gives students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they are learning to an area of employment associated with sport e.g. leisure industry, sports therapy, PE technician etc. The work students produce for their portfolio is continuously assessed by their teacher and internally verified by the PE team. It is vital that students keep up to date with class work and assignment tasks.

Future opportunities

This short course offers you a specialist qualification for working in areas of sport. It could lead onto other vocational qualifications such as a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences or an NVQ as part of an Apprenticeship programme relating to Sport Management, Instructing Fitness and Exercise or Leisure Management. With further training, you could go into a job related to sport such as a Fitness Coach or Leisure Centre Manager. Depending on your other qualifications, you could also progress onto a teacher training course. The course also provides you with the basic knowledge, understanding and skills that many employers are looking for, especially in areas of sport and exercise.
