Course description

At AS level, students will cover two different modules, Further Pure Mathematics and an options module. Further pure mathematics will introduce proof, complex numbers, matrices, further algebra and functions, further calculus and further vectors. The second module will be a further mathematics option which would be one of the following: Further Pure 2, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics and Decision mathematics. At the end of the first year you will sit two examinations. At A2 level students will cover the two modules from the AS level in the first year and extend their studies in these areas whilst also starting two new modules. Students will study Further Pure Mathematics 2 and an additional option module. Further Pure Mathematics 2 consists of similar topics to the pure mathematics component of AS-Level and introduces new topics such as polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions. At the end of the second year you will sit four examinations. You could take this course with other Advanced Level courses to prepare for Higher Education in areas of mathematics, engineering, economics, physics or more general Higher Education courses. With further training, you could go into employment related to mathematics such as an accountancy, engineering, financial advice or teaching.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE or equivalent grades at 4 or above including a 6 in Mathematics.
