Painting & Decorating Apprenticeship - Diploma Level 2 at Redcar & Cleveland College

Course description

To gain the qualifications listed below, you will need to be in a placement which involves working in a painting and decorating environment and assisting a tradesman/woman in practical activities, in order to gain the relevant occupational and industry skills required.

Course content

The current Painting and Decorating Framework is:

NVQ/Diploma Level 2:

There are two types of NVQ, depending on the work you do with your employer.

The following units are mandatory as part of both NVQ.

The following are mandatory core units:

  • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace.
  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace.
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplaces.
  • Erecting and dismantling access/working platforms in the workplace.

The following are optional if following the ‘Painter’ option:

  • Preparing surfaces for painting/decorating in the workplace.
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller in the workplace.

The following are optional if following the ‘Industrial Painter’ option:

  • Preparing surface for painting/decorating in the workplace.
  • Applying paint systems by brush and roller in the workplace.

Plus one of the following:

  • Operate equipment in support of the paint sprayer.
  • Operate equipment in support of the abrasive blast cleaner.

The following are additional units (optional):

  • Hanging standard paper wall coverings in the workplace.
  • Hanging wide-width vinyls in the workplace.
  • Installing coving, centre-pieces and texture products in the workplace.
  • Applying coatings by the airless spray method in the workplace.
  • Applying coatings by the air spray method in the workplace.
  • Producing broken colour work and basic stencilling in the workplace.
  • Producing and applying complex stencil designs in the workplace.

You will collect evidence from work and produce a portfolio to prove you have the skills.

Technical Certificate:

The Technical Certificate is a separate qualification which assesses the specialist knowledge needed within a particular job.

A Diploma Award at Level 2 must be completed as part of the Painting and Decorating Framework. This is a theory based qualification with an end exam. There is also a requirement to complete a synoptic practical task in the college workshops under work simulated conditions.

Entry requirements

There are no formal qualifications needed to commence the Painting and Decorating Framework, although we prefer that you have a good standard of education. You will be required to sit an aptitude test, for English and Maths, to support your application.

Future opportunities

Most of our apprentices continue to be employed at the end of the apprenticeship. There are good opportunities for selfemployment or perhaps progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
