Music Technology Level 3 at Gateshead College

Course description

Digital music production systems have revolutionised the modern music industry, affecting both the way music is produced and the way it is sold.

Low cost computer-based production tools mean that it is possible to create professional quality product without the need to spend a fortune on studio time, and compression technologies like MP3 have completely changed the way music is shared.

If you're a budding producer with some experience of using music production technology and want to take your skills and knowledge to the next level, this is the course for you.

Course content

Working with experienced teachers, you'll learn how to get the best out of music production technology, including Logic Pro and ProTools. You'll learn how to turn simple music ideas into finished work ready for digital distribution or live performance. Find out how the business works and how you might be able to make a living in it and about sound synthesis, sampling and recording technology.

The programme also covers sound for live performance, for those interested in live sound engineering.

As a National Skills Academy Founder college, you will get access to fantastic opportunities at Metro Radio, Leeds Festival and other live performance venues.  

In the past, students have been involved in some great projects, including working at Evolution Festival and BBC Introducing.  

You'll also develop your broader employability skills and studying for and take GCSEs or Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English or maths if you don't already have them.


Entry requirements

  • 4 GCSEs grade A*-C and the equivalent of Level 2 English.
  • For vocational programmes, it would help to have a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience.


  • By continual observation of your practical work, projects, assignments, oral and written questions
  • Continuous assessment using class based assignments and portfolio of evidence

Future opportunities

Once you've completed the course, you could continue your studies with a Foundation or Honours Degree in Music Technology, Music Production or other relevant qualifications in music.

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

With industry standard recording studios, rehearsal spaces and a custom built 200 capacity performance theatre, all our music courses are well catered for.

We were chosen as a founder college of the National Skills Academy Creative and Cultural (NSACC), a national network of colleges, companies and venues around the country that aim to improve the skill level within the Creative Industries.

We were the only college in the region to be chosen for the network which includes the Royal Albert Hall, The Sage Gateshead and companies behind some of the world's biggest music festivals.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
