Performing Arts (Acting) BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Harrogate College

Course description

You will take part in live performances and projects throughout the year. In addition you will learn about the Performing Arts industry and careers and employment within it. We also run an intensive audition and interview process to prepare students for University, Drama Schools and the profession.  There are a number of core units which include:

• Historical Context of Performance
• Performance Workshop
• The Performing Arts Business
• Performing to an Audience
• Rehearsing for Performance
• Principles of Acting

Course content

In addition to these core units there are Acting and Musical Theatre units which are specific to their own discipline.

As part of the course you will be required to take part in evening performances and must be prepared to be flexible with time. There will be theatre visits and trips as part of the course.

Acting units:

You will follow a range of performance styles including acting, classical theatre and contemporary theatre.

The units you will cover could include:
• Drama improvisation
• Devising plays 
• Developing voice for the actor
• Auditions for actors
• Developing Physical Theatre

Musical Theatre units:

You will learn about a range of styles and techniques which are specific to Musical Theatre. These could include the following units:
• Musical Theatre Performance
• Dance Performance
• Singing skills for Actors and Dancers
• Jazz Dance
• Singing Techniques and Performance

Entry requirements

You should have four GCSEs at grades A-C including English Language or at least a Merit grade at First Diploma in Performing Arts. You should also be able to show skill and a commitment to the course through an interview and audition. For the Musical Theatre pathway you should have some proven ability not only in acting but also in singing and dancing.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course you could progress onto higher Education at degree or Foundation degree level including courses at Harrogate College or you could progress into employment.
