Maths AS/A2 Level at Balby Carr Community Academy
You will be starting an A-Level Maths course in September, and it is important that you are ready for the step up. The best way to prepare yourself is to make sure you have a firm grasp of the knowledge and skills you have already developed at GCSE level.
There are a number of key skills which you need to make sure you are confident with before starting the A-Level course - these are used regularly in the Core 1 and Core 2 modules and it is essential that you are not struggling with basic skills when you are trying to learn more advanced material for the first time.
During Year 12 all students will study three modules which lead to an AS in Mathematics:
Module 1 C1Core Maths
Module 2: C2 Core Maths
Module 3: Mechanics 1
In Year 13, students study a further 3 modules which lead to A2:
Module 4: C3 Core Maths
Module 5: C4 Core Maths
Module 6: Statistics 1
The courses are available to all students who have achieved a grade A*, A, in their GCSE examinations and Grade B students will be considered by the Mathematics Department. However, there is a considerable gap between GCSE and Advanced level in the knowledge necessary to succeed and so we recommend that students with a B grade who were entered for the GCSE higher level examination consider their options carefully.
There is a 1 hour 30 minute written examination at the end of each module. All exams will be taken at the end of year 12 in May/June for Core maths C1 C2 and M1.
This method of assessment is then repeated during Year 13 for the A2 qualification with C3, C4 and S1 in May/June.
Students who study this subject go on to enter a variety of careers; the most common areas are listed below:
- Business and finance.
- Commercial, industrial and public management.
- Information Technology.
- Computer Science.
