English Language & Literature AS / A2 Level at University Church of England Academy

Course description

English students will follow the AQA AS / A2 specification Version B, a combination of Literature
and Language study. The new course is divided into 2 levels: AS and A2. Each level is made up
of two units of work.
AS level:
- Unit 1: The Study of Language and Literature. Ability to critically assess literary and non-
literary texts. Students study an anthology on a given theme: 1½ hour written exam.
- Unit 2: Themes in Language and Literature. Students study two texts on a similar theme,
produced at different times and in very different contexts. Students develop two pieces of
coursework: one analytical, one creative.
A2 level:
- Unit 3: Talk in Life and Literature. Students study how speech has been represented
in Literature; and also use linguistics to analyse speech in real life. This module includes
compulsory study of a Shakespeare play. Two hour written examination.
- Unit 4: Text Transformation. Final unit coursework based on a creative transformation and
critical commentary of two individually chosen texts.

Entry requirements

Good GCSE English grades in both Language and Literature; preferably B and above.
