Applied Health & Social Care AS A2 GCE at Guilsborough School
The Applied General Certificate in Health and Social Care is a vocational course leading to an AS GCE after one year, and an Advanced GCE after two years. The course content is wide ranging and covers health care, social care, early years care and early years education.
It is a modular course, with three units being studied in each year. The units studied in the AS year are less demanding than those in the A2 year.
The GCE is a broadly based course which gives students opportunities to learn about many facets of work and practice in health care, social care and early years care. The roles of many practitioners, along with their methods, principles and practices of work are explored. The organisation of care providers across society is studied. An understanding of the skills that are needed for all types of care is developed. The factors affecting health and illness are delved into.
This qualification can lead to both further studies in higher education in any related field, or more directly into care employment. There is flexibility in the course to allow students to focus on their own areas of interest. Applied GCEs are recognised alongside more traditional subjects for college entry requirements.
The course enables students to develop:
Communication skills within care settings
IT skills in research and producing reports
Time management and organisational skills when working on independent assignments
Creative and analytical skills
Depth of understanding of the development and needs of individuals
Abilities to discuss and evaluate issues in society today
New perspectives about caring and health and early years care

Choice of units covering Exercise and Health *, Human Development,*, Diagnosis and Treatment*, or Clients with Disabilities*
Choice of a range of optional units
At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above
*These units are assessed by external examination, the rest are assessed by internally marked portfolio (extended reports).
