Course description

What is Biology?
Biology is the study of life processes and living organisms.

Why study Biology?
The study of Biology helps with your understanding of life and how living things work. Studying Biology opens up many different and varied career pathways.

Course content

The Salters Nuffield Advanced Biology Course is studied. This is an interactive and innovative course which makes extensive use of online resources. As with other Post 16 courses, Biology is split into two parts: AS and A2. The AS acts as a springboard to the second year A2 course, but can also act as a standalone subject to complement other courses.

Unit 1 – Lifestyle, Genes, Transport and Health

Unit 2 – Development, Plants and Environment

Unit 3 – Practical Biology Research Skills

A2 Modules
Unit 4 – The Natural Environment and Species Survival
- Forensics and Immunology
- The Natural Environment

Unit 5 – Energy, Exercise and Coordination
• Run for Your Life (Muscles and Movement)
• Grey Matter (Nervous System)

Unit 6 – Practical Biology and Investigative Skills

Entry requirements

GCSE Core Science, Additional Science and Mathematics Higher Tier at Grade B or above.

Future opportunities

What opportunities are there for me to study beyond the classroom?
The course has some excellent resources which are found on the course website and you will be able to access work from home. Homework will be submitted electronically and will give you immediate feedback which can then be used later for revision purposes.

What kind of career does this subject/qualification prepare me for?
Studying Biology gives all students the option of progressing down any healthcare route, such as Doctor, Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist or Vet. On top of these, Biology graduates can expect jobs in Marine Conservation, Law, Teaching, Agriculture and Research.
