MUSIC at Steyning Grammar School

Course description

AS topics studied

  • Unit 1: Performing- solo or ensemble. Any style of music, any instrument or voice
  • Unit 2: Composing: A 3- minute piece.
  • Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding: Study of Anthology pieces. Listening questions are based on the anthologies studied. You will also investigate Musical Styles, Chords, and Musical Lines.

    A2 topics studied

  • Unit 4: Extended Performance (12 – 15 minutes). Recital opportunity.
  • Unit 5: Composition and Technical Study. Two tasks, choice from Composing, Baroque Counterpoint and Chorale
  • Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding. Aural analysis of unfamiliar music. Study of Anthologies, relating to musical context and continuity and change in instrumental music.

    By studying Music, you will be stimulated, motivated and challenged. You will enjoy the flexible specification where you can perform and compose in a style to suit you. You will enjoy performing with others and participating in concerts / events in school and the Community. You will gain a wealth of knowledge in a wide range of musical styles and you will enjoy exploring and analysing these works in depth. You will develop your creative skills and have opportunities to celebrate these achievements

  • Entry requirements

    You need to play a musical instrument at approximately grade 5 level, or above. You need Music Theory skills, preferably at grade 5 level.
