German (AS/A Level) at New College Swindon

Course description

In the AS/A Level course you will build on the skills you’ve acquired at GCSE and learn to express yourself more fluently and confidently. You’ll be encouraged to develop your ideas and opinions on topics that are relevant, and of interest, to young people.

During the course we will focus on practising listening, speaking, reading and translation skills in group activities in class. You will be expected to learn vocabulary and to do most of your written work in your own time.

By the end of the course you should be able to say and write what you think, as well as understand what others think, about the issues we cover.

Entry requirements

You should have GCSE grade C or above in German; if not, we can negotiate on an individual basis.

You should be prepared to take an active part in classes and to use your initiative in engaging with the language in your own time.

The A level is assessed at the end of year two.

  • One speaking test at the end of the course, involving conversation, ideas and opinions
  • One exam  at the end of the course, involving listening, reading and writing

Students who only wish to gain an AS qualification can take exams at the end of year one, which will involve a speaking test, a listening, reading and writing test.

Future opportunities

The ability to speak another language can be an advantage in life. Studying a language at a higher level can develop your confidence and communication skills, as well as improve your career prospects.

If you want to go to university, you can study German by itself, or as part of a course, for example, with accounting, business, engineering or law. Many universities encourage students to spend a year abroad, and many employers value people with experience of other languages and cultures.
