Music BTEC Level 2 at Basingstoke College of Technology

Course description

This course will interest you if you wish to have a career as a sound engineer or technician within radio, theatre or music related industries. The topics covered include sound systems, sequencing, digital sound and the sound industry. You will have the opportunity to work with professional sound engineers in our sound studio and take part in activities both in college and off-site.

Music Technology and Sound Engineering students work in self contained recording studios and can take advantage of the latest in music hardware and software. The state of the art studios offer Apple iMacs with industry standard Logic Software, MBox 2 soundcards and M-Audio Oxygen 61 keyboards.

Course content

The course covers a wide range of subjects including:

  • Working in the Music Profession
  • Planning and Creating a Music Product
  • Exploring Musical Composition
  • DJ Technology and Performance
  • Producing a Musical Recording

 

The course will be delivered through a variety of mediums including individual and group assignments, practical application of classroom based teaching and industry related projects.

Students may also choose to study for a GCSE to increase their qualifications, or to resit a previous GCSE subject to improve a grade. To enhance employment opportunities the course may also have additional qualifications built into the programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade D or above, including English and Maths or Level 1 Diploma in Creative Technologies.

Assessment

The course is continuously assessed through written and practical assignments/tests.

Financial information

If you are aged 16-18, tuition and registration fees are free. 
If you are aged 19 or over, tuition and registration fees are payable at the start of each year of study; please ask for details.
If you are aged 24 or over, you may be eligible for a Student Loan to assist with your fees; please ask for details.

Future opportunities

This course is a recognised route onto a Level 3 course, students should aim for a merit or distinction grade to ensure progression.
