Classical Civilization A Level at Woodroffe School

Course description

The study of AS Level Classical Civilisation allows the students to look at many aspects of the classical world which are significant in the development of the modern world.

The Classical Civilisation AS Level offers students an opportunity to engage with the study of Classics. It also allows those who have the firm foundation of GCSE Classical Civilisation the opportunity to build upon the skills and knowledge that they have acquired.

As well as being superb preparation for the further study in the Classics, a study of Classical Civilisation complements many other popular A Level subjects including Art, Drama, English Literature, Government and Politics and History

Course content

Unit 1 - The world of the hero - Virgil’s Aeneid
Unit 2 - Beliefs and Ideas - Love and Relationships

Entry requirements

GSCE Grade B or above in either History, Classical Civilisation or Ancient History. Those who have not taken one of these subjects at GCSE will need a Grade B or above in a subject involving written analysis and investigation (English at Grade 6 or above will be required).

Assessment

Exam 1 – The world of the hero - 40% Two hours twenty minutes
Exam 2 – Beliefs and Ideas - 60% One hour forty five minutes
