Bricklaying Level 2 Diploma at North Hertfordshire College

Course description

Our construction courses include lots of opportunities for you to get hands-on experience of the world of work, including:

  • Work experience with businesses like Willmott Dixon, CEC Electrical and Heat Safe Ltd
  • Opportunities to enter WorldSkills competitions to showcase your skills against the best students from around the world
  • Engagement with guest speakers from businesses like Willmott Dixon
  • Access to free training, tools and an opportunity to work in construction through dry lining specialist, Grays, thanks to NHC’s partnership with the Construction Skills Academy.

Brickwork: you’ll learn how to draw and follow building plans, use machinery to cut materials to size, erect scaffolding, as well as lay and damp-proof foundations for a range of different structures. There is plenty of variety in this trade - the work will take you
both indoors and outdoors, up high-rise structures and even down tunnels.

Course content

Through this course you’ll learn about:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction, information and communication
  • Building solid walling, isolated and attached piers
  • Interpreting working drawings to set our masonry structures
  • Constructing cavity walling to form masonry structures.

Entry requirements

A level 1 qualification in a relevant subject area, passed with Merit or Distinction grade - plus maths and English grade D or above, or functional skills level 1 maths and English.

Assessment

This course is assessed through assignments, projects, practical and online tests. You’ll only sit exams if you’re also doing maths or English GCSE or functional skills

There are no tuition fees for students aged 16-18 years.

    • Our ECC is a 19,000 sq.ft. facility, right next to the train station in Stevenage and easily accessible from the A1. All of our construction, engineering & welding and motor vehicle courses are delivered here.

      Over the last two years, with the support of the Hertfordshire LEP, we’ve invested over £900,000 in additional space, new equipment and resources to make sure that our learning environment is consistent with that of a modern sector workplace. We’ve invested in a:

      • fully equipped mechatronics lab covering manufacturing, hydraulics & pneumatics, industrial controls and industrial robots
      • computer aided design suite, with software including Autocad, Solidworks & rapid prototype/3D modelling systems
      • comprehensive workshop facility that includes benches, hand and machine cutting tools, CNC and fabrication and welding areas for the production of prototype models
      • fully equipped electronics lab with a wide range of test equipment and tools including, oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, signal generators, op-amps, and multi-meters

      By studying at our dynamic ECC Campus, our fantastic facilities mean that you’ll feel like you’re working on a site in your chosen sector. The Campus is also really close to Airbus Defence and Space and some of the other major employers in the area.
