Art and Design A2 Level at The Astley Cooper School

Course description

This course develops an adventurous and enquiring approach to Art and Design. You will be learning how to develop your ideas, experiment with resources and produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas. You will also study the contexts behind art and design, and how art and design reflects today’s contemporary society, other times and cultures. How is the course examined or assessed? The course is assessed through practical based units: Unit 3 - Coursework. You create the supporting studies, a linked personal study of 1000-3000 words and practical outcomes from personal starting points. This unit is worth 30% of your A Level. Unit 4 - Externally Set Assignment. Like the AS, you respond to a given theme and produce practical work and evidence at supporting studies. This unit includes a 12 hour practical exam. Alongside the 50% from your AS units, this unit is worth the remaining 20% of your A Level. Additional Information Success on this course is dependent on you having a genuine interest in Art and Design and its related disciplines and possibilities.

Future opportunities

This course provides vocationally related education and training for those who are intending to work in the creative industries. You may go on to college to do a one year BTEC Foundation Course, or to University to continue your studies in a particular area of Art and Design. Alternatively you may choose to being a work experience placement at a Graphic Design studio which could lead to a full time well paid job. We are living in a world that is becoming more driven by the creative industries so what better place to start!You will follow this course with two or three other A2 levels or an Advanced Diploma and, additionally, the compulsory core such as PSHE, RE, PE/Games.
