Course description

If you want to pursue a career involving horses, then this is an excellent place to start. This course will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge in horse-related subjects and giving you experience required to further develop your understanding.
Successful completion of this programme contributes towards the BHS Stage 3 in Horse Knowledge, providing knowledge for employment.
During this course you will explore both theoretical and practical subjects and you will study the following topics: Reproduction of Horses; Anatomy and Physiology; Fittening and Nutrition; Event Management and Supervision; Ground Schooling; Exercising to Maintain Fitness; Grassland Management and Equine Coaching.
You may also cover other units on this programme, including: Understanding Horse Welfare and Behaviour; Animal Science; Promoting Health and Care of the Competition Horse.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs (minimum grade C). You will be required to attend an interview and taster day on ‘the yard’ and provide a reference (from an employer or recent school/college report) along with evidence of specific and sustained interest and motivation in horses and the horse industry; and an ability to cope with a programme of physical activity.


Assessment is a combination of coursework and practical assessments.
