Home Economics - Food AS level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School

Course description

You will learn more advanced practical skills, have the opportunity to design and make products of your choice.

As well as improving your knowledge of food and its function in the diet you will also learn about the food industry from designing through to the completion of the finished product.

Course content

Unit 1 - Materials and Components

Written Examination: 2 hours (50% of total AS marks)

Candidates will have the opportunity to study nutrition and design and making in the human context.

Candidates will be given the opportunity to develop and solve a problem relating to food design and making.

They will gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of food technology.

Unit 2 - Coursework

Approximately 50 hours work. (50% of total AS marks)

This will be in a written or electronic design portfoilo. Coursework may either be a single design and make project, two smaller projects and/or a portfolio of work.

Entry requirements

You will need to have an interest in cooking. You need to be aware that during the course you will do two pieces of written coursework and therefore you have to be motivated to cope with the workload, along with written coursework folders.

It is not essential for you to have done D&T: Food at GCSE, however you will find it easier if you have.

You need to have good practial and written skills.

Financial information

You have to be prepared to provide all of the necessary ingredients.

Future opportunities

Any career in food and food industries. You may want to go to catering college and do a chef's qualification.

You can also use the subject to go into the hospitality sector.
