Music A Level at The John Fisher School

Course description

To develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and competencies required for establishing a career in sports related professions. The course will provide you with an opportunity to examine the practical and theoretical elements that influence sports, exercise performance and participation.

Course content

During the course you will study: Unit 1 An Introduction to Physical Education. Students will study: Anatomy and Physiology; Movement Skills; the role of the cardiovascular system; the nature and development of motor skills; contemporary sporting issues. Unit 2 Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education. Candidates gain an appreciation of the nature of performance, its evaluation, and what can be done to improve it. Unit 3 Principles and Concepts across Different Areas of Physical Education. Options within this are: Socio-cultural Options: Historical Studies, Comparative Studies Scientific Options: Biomechanics, Exercise and Sport Physiology, Sports Psychology Unit 4 The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education The application of Practical Skills and the methodology surrounding the evaluation, appreciation and improvement of performance.

Entry requirements

Grade B in GCSE Sports Studies preferred.

Future opportunities

This is a good subject for entry to courses such as Sport Science, Teaching, Sports Development, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Leisure Management or Medicine. Physical Education is also suitable for those going on to careers including sports, public service, leisure industry, etc.
