Hospitality & Catering Diploma Level 1 at PETROC
Hospitality and catering is a world with all kinds of opportunities and, if it appeals to you, this study programme should serve up just the start you need, with plenty of hands-on practical experience and the opportunity to progress on to a higher level course or enter employment as an apprentice.
This qualification is for students who aim to gain practical skills in a professional kitchen and restaurant environment. You will cover a range of topics from basic meat, fish, poultry and vegetable preparation, cake and dough products, through to team and customer service skills. As well as practical experience, you will also gain knowledge through theory work in a range of subjects such as Introduction to the Hospitality Industry, Healthy Eating, Food Service and Customer Service.
Real work experience to enhance employability can also form part of the programme in our brand new, modern commercial kitchen and restaurants. Assessments are based primarily on practical work, however, you will also have to complete short-answer questions and small assignments throughout the year. You will be given full guidance and support to help you with your assessments.
All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade E/2 or equivalent or above, preferably including Maths and English Language.
At the end of the one-year programme all learners are expected to have achieved GCSE Maths and GCSE English Language at grade 4, or show that they have been working towards improving their English and Maths by achieving an improvement to their previous grade.
Continual practical assessments are part of the programme and learner will also have to complete short answer questions and small assignments throughout the year.

A. Yes, you will need to purchase kitchen and restaurant uniform, knives and books.
Q. Is there any financial help available?
A. Yes, qualifying students can apply for support from the 'College Learner Support Fund' which is means tested.
It is a natural pathway for progression to Level 2 Hospitality and Catering programmes and apprenticeships and is ideal for anyone seeking a trainee position in the hospitality and catering industry.
The section has a cutting edge training kitchen and a modern, fine dining restaurant - The Taw in which learners develop their cookery and food service skills. Petroc has a dedicated learning resource area with bookable computers for learners to use during self study time. There is a well stocked college library available to support learners. Learners will also be given an opportunity to gain a food safety certificate.
