Physical Education at Sprowston Community High School

Course description


You will study two units. ‘Participation in Sport and Recreation’ considers the concepts of healthy lifestyles and includes case studies on modern day trends. It also includes a study on the development of training programmes and their resulting physiological effects on the body. The development of competitive sport over time and the concept of lifelong participation forms the second part of the unit.‘The Critical Sports Performer’ unit covers the practical aspects of performance in two sports and observation and analysis in one sport. It also covers the local and national provision of a chosen sport.


You will study two units. The first unit is ‘Preparation for Optimum Sports Performance’ and it considers psychological/physiological preparations made by elite performers. It also considers some of the sociological advancements on modern day sport.‘The Developing Sports Performer’ unit covers the practical aspects of performance and observation and analysis in one sport. It includes an international study of a chosen sport and the construction of a development and life plan to further improve performance in the chosen sport.


All AS and A2 PE students are expected to complete one hour of school service per week throughout the school year. This involves students assisting the PE teacher to deliver activities in Key Stage 3 PE lessons. Students may be asked to lead warm ups, organise practices and officiate games. In addition, students will complete the ‘Day Leaders Certificate’, a nationally recognised certificate from Sports Leaders UK.

Entry requirements

To study A Level courses you will need to have achieved at least 5 GCSE Grades A*-C in full courses including either English or Maths. B grade or higher in GCSE Physical Education or BTEC Sports award at Merit or higher. GCSE English at grade B or higher. Students will, ideally, be participating in at least one sport at club level or above for the duration of the course.
