You will have weekly classes in technique and choreography, as well as looking at the essentials of being a healthy performer through anatomy, physiology, diet and fitness. You will also watch, discuss and write about professional dance and your own work.

This is a modular course with two units to complete in the first year AS course, and two further units in the second year.

Course content

At AS Level the focus is on developing your skills in choreography and performance work. You will gain experience of contemporary technique through technique classes, and you will be exposed to a range of styles in order to assist with your own development. You will start to develop critical skills for dance analysis, both in relation to your own work and the work of professionals.

In the second year you will build on and develop your choreographic and performance skills, focussing particularly on solo performance and group choreography. You will also gain theoretical knowledge of a specific area of study related to the development of Modern Dance.

Entry requirements

You need at least five GCSE’s at Grade C and above (including English and maths) and three GCSEs at grade D or above. Previous dance experience is essential.

You will be assessed by practical examination and written paper.
